A British wizard (Eddie Redmayne) comes to America to seek out magical beasts and catalogue them into a textbook that will teach wizards to protect the animals. While doing so, he must confront bureaucrats, a society for the destruction of witches, and an evil sorcerer (Colin Farrell). Also with Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo and Johnny Depp. Directed by David Yates. [2:13]
SEX/NUDITY 2 - A woman kisses a man quickly on the cheek. A woman kisses a man in a rain (he is in a trance).
► A man pushes the hair away from a woman's eyes and asks if he can come back to see her and she agrees. A man and a woman flirt at a dinner table, smiling and giggling.
► A giant rhino-like beast, presumably male, with a glowing bulbous head and long nose horn confronts a small female hippo as a man says, "She's in season. She needs to mate"; he shakes some magic potion into the air and makes grunting noises like a hippo, bends his knees, and shakes his rear end toward the large beast that then chases him when another man spills the potion and the beast chases him out of the zoo and into a park (Please see the Violence/Gore category for more details).
► Two scenes feature a woman wearing a negligee and robe, exposing moderate cleavage. A few scenes include three or four women wearing low-cut ball gowns that are backless, revealing moderate cleavage.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - At a banquet, lights go out, a high wind and black smoke sweep into a hall, rip up a banner, and kill a man as he speaks at a podium; he falls on his shriveled face (which is gray with black cracks), with open eyes as another man exclaims, "Witches!" A woman reaches for a belt and it whips up to form a large black cloud that shrieks and kills her with wind as walls crack; she falls dead on her face, which is now white, with black cracks. A witch floats in a chair above water and begins to lower into it to her death while her face is trancelike. A wizard fires dozens of electric bolts at a cloud and another wizard in an extended tunnel scene; both wizards fly off a platform and hit the ground, they fly down the empty tracks to hit the ground again, the smoke shrieks and turns inky black, wizards fires wands at it, and a wizard lassos another wizard with a magic rope (we see open bloody gashes on the back and arms of the wizard).
► A fireball fills the screen and it clears to show newspaper headlines proclaiming the appearances of the "Dark Wizard"; one headline is accompanied by a line drawing of a dragon breathing fire (some newspaper photos move as if they are film footage). Something invisible eats an apple in the air and travels along a street with another apple (floating), bumping slow moving cars and causing horses to rear and neigh. Lights shine below the surface of a frozen pond and children skating there fall, uninjured but unable to move.
► A wizard interrogates another wizard and produces a bubble containing inky black smoke, which is the suppressed powers of a child that has been abused; the interrogator says the second wizard brought it with him illegally and sentences him and a witch to death; we see the two prisoners chained at the wrists behind their backs and taken to an empty room where the floor changes to water and a matron touches a wand to the female's head, pulls out a stream of light, tosses the light into the watery floor and images of the woman's family appear.
► A man stands on a pile of bricks and broken stones near a building as we hear screeching and the building breaks apart and something unseen rips up the cobblestones down the center of a long street. Silver and black waves slowly rise around a witch, and she jumps out of a chair and a wizard catches her (they escape). A chicken-like creature the size of a cat with soft spikes on its head and back jumps on a man and bites his neck, leaving four red dots and knocks him unconscious; then it demolishes the man's room in smoke and rubble (the room and the building are later restored.
► A suitcase shudders and something inside jabbers as two small clawed paws slip out briefly. A small platypus comes out of a suitcase and robs a jewelry store and a bank; a wizard chases it as it breaks a glass chandelier, glass display shelves, and the front window with tinkling sounds and crashing until the wizard waves a wand and restores the building, but the animal get stuck in new glass as it gels (the wizard pulls it out just before police officers rush up pointing guns). A wizard escapes his chains with the help of a tiny twig man and knocks out two matrons.
► A woman breaks the magic wand of a girl (aged 8), demands to have a boy's belt, and the belt comes alive and flies to the floor. A teen boy removes his belt, his adoptive mother takes it and they walk upstairs where it is implied that he will be beaten. A wizard gives a tiny twig man to a gnome who has curly fingers and sharp nails (the twig man cries). A man punches a gnome hard in the nose. A wizard slaps an abused teen boy in the head and the boy cries; later, the boy becomes a huge swirling cloud of black smoke and red embers, destroying streets, and emptying cars, and buildings; an empty car is thrown across the screen and crashes loudly, a smoky face roars into the camera and the smoke ends up in a subway tunnel, where it looks like lava and foam on a wall.
► A man or a woman wave a wand and disappear in several scenes, sometimes accompanied by another man or woman. A wizard causes a man or a crowd of men and women to freeze in place, as if in a trance in a few scenes. A wizard opens a suitcase onto the floor and jumps in, using it as a portal to a magic world several times. Two women and a mortal man follow a wizard and in one scene, the mortal gets stuck in a suitcase, hops around and finally falls through. A giant phoenix flies out of a suitcase and takes a vial of liquid into storm clouds of thunder and lightning; rain falls and men and women on the street freeze in place, their memories of disappearing.
► A woman on the steps of a building shouts to a crowd that witches in NYC must be eliminated. A man sees some of the various creatures in a magic realm and screams. A man says that he saw a dark wind with white eyes in 1930s New York City. An older man and his two adult sons argue loudly about politics and lights go out in the city. We hear that a woman adopted many children, beat them, verbally abused them, and forced them to hand out anti-witchcraft literature on the streets. We hear that a girl died when she locked her magic powers into a bubble. A witch can read others' minds so she can help them when they are sad. A twig man makes a rude tongue sound (a raspberry) at a wizard. Wizards erect a protective dome of light over a subway entrance trapping a boy, now an angry entity, as a man shouts, "That thing killed my son!"
► A dead body floats in a hologram above the heads of wizards as they try to determine what caused the man's death. A teen boy's palms are cut in several places and raw. A woman's palm is cut and bloody in several places. A shiny blue buzzing fly is eaten by a pink insect-like creature which is then eaten by a purple owl.
► Animals escape from a zoo and an ostrich nearly runs over two men in the snow, a lion walks down a sidewalk and frightens police officers it passes, a giant rhino-like creature corners a small hippo (please see the Sex/Nudity category for more details) before chasing a man up a tree, jamming its horn into the trunk and burning part of the tree down, and then chasing the man across a frozen pond; the man falls and a wizard opens a suitcase, finally sucking the animal into it as the creature licks the man's face.
► A huge squawking bird-snake attacks a mortal man and a wizard, winding around and pushing them up against a wall, and breaking the roof off a building in the process; the man catches a cockroach, tosses it to a witch with a teapot, and the bug goes inside the pot where the snake-bird flies into the pot, becoming small, and we see it swallow the bug.
► A magic realm is full of unusual animals: We see two giant beetles rolling balls of earth and moss, a family of bison-like creatures are hairless and have tentacles around their mouths and upright horns on their heads, a small herd of creatures looks like sheep with huge eyes and no wool, a tiger has glowing skin and a mantle around its neck that expands like a lizard's when it roars, a tree sheds its leaves and they turn into butterflies, a tree is full of tiny men made of twigs and leaves, a gibbon-like creature has long gray hair, bubbles in the air contain tiny creatures, and a giant phoenix has three sets of wings and squawks loudly. A large nest holds six young bird-snakes that have scales and bird heads and wings.
► A skyscraper houses a realm where wizards and witches monitor the world for good and evil magic: We see some elves and gnomes with large heads, droopy ears, long noses, and sharp teeth; bat-like creatures fly slowly through an atrium. A man leaves a large ceramic egg on a chair in a bank and another man puts it in his own pocket; the egg rumbles a few times and it later cracks to show what looks like a small wet chicken and the first man puts the animal into a suitcase.
► A wizard and a witch awaken an unconscious man, who grunts (it sounds a little like flatulence), and take him to the witch's apartment for dinner; plates and napkins set the table themselves and foods float together in the air to form completely cooked dishes.
LANGUAGE 2 - 1 mild obscenity, name-calling (crazy, weird, wicked, unnatural, fanatics, fools, freaks, freak, boy, incorrigible, beggar, little bugger), exclamations (good gravy, a word that sounds like "shoot"), 5 religious exclamations (a word that sounds like "Jesus!" but not fully enunciated, three nonsense-syllable magic words are called out in different scenes, a statue of Santa Claus stands in a department store window).
SUBSTANCE USE - A wizard gives two white pills from a brown bottle to a mortal person who swallows them with water, a wizard rubs leaves together for a poultice and places it on a man's neck where we see a few small puncture wounds, and a wizard mixes a liquid that can change into a flying mammal with ridged wings. A man holds a short glass of whiskey in his office, we see a bar scene with liquor bottles and glasses on shelves, a man in a bar drinks a small glass of sherry in a couple of scenes and laughs explosively once, a gnome in a bar drinks from a short glass of brown liquor, a man drinks from a neon-blue liquid in a wineglass, and a banquet features many tables set with short "rocks" glasses that contain water. A male gnome holds a short cigar in his mouth (we see no smoke).
